Green Transportation
The 2009 Conference Committee would like to encourage all attendees to consider using our Chartered Bus Service for travel between Sacramento to Lake Tahoe. This will be a relaxing and comfortable way for you to get to the conference without the stress of traffic and/or renting a car from the airport. It’ll also be a great networking opportunity.
Buses will pick up conference attendees at the Sacramento International Airport (SMF) and the Sacramento Amtrak Station on Sunday, September 13th. At the end of the conference, buses will drop off conference attendees at those two locations on Wednesday, September 16th. Chartered Bus Schedule.
- For those traveling from Southern California, please schedule your Flights to Sacramento to arrive at SMF no later than an arrival time of 2:40pm on Sunday. For the return on Wednesday, please schedule your outgoing flight leaving SMF no earlier than 3:00pm. A list of flights from eight California airports is shown on the Flights to Sacramento (SMF) Schedule.
- For those traveling from the San Francisco Bay Area, please use the Capitol Corridor. The Capitol Corridor connects these Bay Area cities to the Sacramento Amtrak Station: San Jose, Santa Clara, Fremont, Hayward, Oakland, Emeryville, Berkeley, Richmond, Martinez, and Suisun/Fairfield. Catch train #724, #728, #732, or #734. Please see Capitol Corridor Schedule.
- For those living in the Sacramento area, please utilize the charter bus service by either being dropped off at the Amtrak station or parking your vehicle at the station. The parking rate is $6.50 per day ($26.00 for the entire conference). Cash or credit cards are accepted at the self-serve pay stations.
The buses are currently scheduled to leave SMF on Sunday, September 13th at 12:15pm and 3:15pm. The buses will then pick up passengers at the Sacramento Amtrak Station at 1:00pm and 4:00pm. Conference committee members will be at both locations to direct and assist conference attendees utilizing this bus service. We would like as many conference attendees to sign up for the bus service as possible. If so, we can expand it to three bus runs or even more. Three bus runs would go with this schedule: leave SMF at 11:15am, 1:15pm, and 3:15pm, with pickup at the Amtrak station at noon, 2:00pm, and 4:00pm.
The return trip will be on Wednesday, September 16th. We will go with at least two express buses that will leave the Resort at Squaw Creek at noon with arrival at SMF at 2:00pm and Amtrak also at 2:00pm. Again, please schedule your flights to depart no earlier than 3:00pm that afternoon
The cost for the round-trip bus fee is $40 per person. You can sign up for transportation using the online registration form. If you have already registered for the conference, you can still sign up for the $40 bus service by going in and clicking the edit link. Attention AICP Planners!
The 2009 APA California Conference sessions/workshops and keynote presentations have been submitted for AICP credit approval. This generally takes a couple of months, however APA California Chapter is confident that the conference will qualify for over 90% of the submissions as it has in the past years. “Fun Mobile Workshops and Events” that are not educational do not qualify. Currently we estimate up to 20 AICP credits are available to receive at this year’s conference which calculates to over 50% of the needed 32 credits to remain certified. We will keep you posted on our conference website with current AICP information as we receive it.

Socially Responsible Event
The Green Team has worked with the League to Save Lake Tahoe, a Tahoe-based non-profit, to provide conference attendees and their families the opportunity to participate in the 2009 Tahoe Forest Stewardship Day. This is an opportunity to fulfill the social responsibility goals and objectives for the 2009 conference by giving back to the local community and surrounding environment.
Join hundreds of Tahoe Basin residents and visitors for this FREE EVENT as they help to improve forest health and reduce the risk of catastrophic fires on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe. The event will take place on Saturday September 12th at Ed Zberg Sugar Pine Point State Park in Tahoma California. This years event will help in the restoration efforts by focusing community involvement on erosion control, fuels reduction efforts, clean-up, and educational outreach. The event will also include a raffle and lunch for all participants. Click here for more information.
Volunteers of all activity levels and ages are welcome. All volunteers should wear sturdy shoes and long pants, and bring a water bottle, work gloves, hardhats, rakes, and shovels if volunteers have them available. For more information on the event or to sign-up to volunteer, contact Flavia Sordelet with the League to Save Lake Tahoe at (530) 541-5388 or [email protected]. Please let her know that you are with the conference. Registration and personal transportation is required.
