The Town of Corte Madera, California is seeking a Community Development Director to lead its economic development, building and planning initiatives. The Community Development Director will have an opportunity to select new staff members and build out the team in this Town Department. Under direction of the Town Manager, the Community Development Director plans, organizes, administers, reviews, and evaluates all the functions of the Department of Community Development to serve the Town of Corte Madera.  This is a department director level class responsible for planning, directing and obtaining resources for all operations and programs of the Community Development Department. Community Development Director exercises significant discretion, within legal and general policy and regulatory guidelines, and independently develops and implements departmental policies, procedures, and services. This position provides assistance to the Town Manager in a variety of administrative, coordinative, analytical, and liaison capacities. The Incumbent ensures long- and short- range planning and goals and activities of the department, including administration of building permits and inspections, housing-related programs, and code enforcement, are completed in a timely and efficient manner consistent with defined policies and regulations. Ideal Candidate:
  • Masters Degree in City or Urban Planning or related Field
  • American Institute of Certified Planners Certification
  • Team player focused on working collaboratively with and supporting the work of the Town’s management team and community development department staff; ability to perform a wide variety of technical and managerial tasks as needed in support of overall Town and team goals and mission
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with demonstrated ability to effectively explain complex topics and information to diverse audiences
  • Motivated by complex planning and development challenges such as housing affordability, sea level rise, economic development, and suburban design issues
  • Motivated to find creative local solutions through community engagement, technical analysis, and thoughtfully developed policies and programs
  • Understanding of principles of urban design and/or landscape design (and ability to create explanatory graphics)

Required Skills / Experience / Education

Experience: • At least 5 years of increasingly responsible experience in planning or community development in a public sector setting including two years of experience in a management/supervisory role. Training: • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with major coursework in community development, urban planning, civil engineering, business or public administration or a related field. Master’s degree strongly desired. Certifications and Licenses: • Possess a valid California Driver’s License at the time of appointment and maintain for the duration of employment with the Town of Corte Madera • AICP Certification desired Application Process: See full job description and job posting at Job is Open Until Filled. Salary Range

$79.95 - $97.19/hour $166, 296 - $202,155/annual salary
