Senior Planning Lead/Operations Manager IV – Rancho Cordova/Oakland

We are currently seeking a dynamic and personable manager to lead and build Michael Baker International’s Northern California Planning Practice.  This position will focus on land use policy programs, including community plans, resiliency programs, community outreach services, and environmental analysis practices. Your focus will be on the growth of two primary team locations, in Rancho Cordova and Oakland. You will help to establish Michael Baker International at the forefront of our industry as the go to planning and environmental firm throughout the northern part of the state. 



•Manage the Policy Planning Practice, including supervision, guidance, direction, and project oversight, as appropriate. Management includes determining the staff growth opportunities necessary or beneficial to meet local and regional goals.

•Serve as project lead and/or director of planning projects and for strategic pursuits in Northern California. The direct role will involve quality assurance/quality control, client care, and scope and budget oversight, as necessary. 

•Work with the office manager, area executive, regional and national practice leads, and key staff to create (and update annually) a business plan/strategy for growth of the practice based on market opportunities and metric goals.

•Lead, partner with other Michael Baker teams, and/or oversee marketing and business development activities and networking in order to implement the business strategy.

•Establish and maintain client relationships for the Northern California Planning Practice.

•Participate in a range of professional organizations to grow the practice’s visibility and business opportunities, including coordinating participation and representation at key conferences.

•Provide exemplary leadership, determine direction, lead market awareness, and serve as a role model for others.

•Identify and develop emerging talent and leadership to create upward mobility and succession planning.

•Play a significant role in maintaining quality and targeted profitability on planning projects, as well as assist with managing staffing and resources throughout the company’s West Region to ensure planning projects are executed with a high level of efficiency and technical excellence.

Required Skills/Experience/Education:


•A minimum of 10 years of project management and personnel supervision for planning-related projects

•Experience with local, state, and federal agencies

•At least 10 years of involvement in marketing and business development activities, including proposals and presentations

•Community and professional leadership experience



•Strong ability to identify, develop, and capture business

•Knowledge of business and management principles involved in leadership techniques, strategic planning, resource allocation, and production methods

•Ability to foster and cultivate the Michael Baker culture and exemplify the company’s shared values

•Excellent communication skills

•Computer skills: MS Office Suite

•AICP certification preferred



•Bachelor’s degree or higher in planning, engineering, environmental studies, architecture, or related discipline from an accredited program
