Job Description


The City of Larkspur seeks a highly effective administrator to oversee the newly created Community Development Department. Reporting to the City Manager, the Community Development Director will manage and coordinate planning, building, and code enforcement activities and will have the ability to communicate technical planning issues and process to residents, the City Council, Planning Commission, Heritage Preservation Board, and other stakeholders. The ideal candidate will have knowledge and practical experience in the areas of current and advanced planning and an understanding of the principles of economic development. The selected candidate is expected to work alongside the City Manager in modernizing the department and evaluating the operations and staffing of the newly created department (previously the Planning and Building Department) to identity improvements, immediately with the hiring of the Chief Building Official.

Required Skills/Experience/Education:

  • Minimum requirements for this position include a bachelor’s degree in urban planning, architecture, civil engineering, or a closely related field with a minimum of five years of progressively responsible supervisory and management experience involving interpretation and application of planning and zoning codes and regulations. This candidate will have strong administrative and leadership skills in addition to exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. The Community Development Director will be expected to hit the ground running and utilize their skill-sets to engage and respond to the community and execute priority projects of engagement and interest in their community.
